In the arid heart of Chile, a remarkable journey begins. A dozen critically endangered Loa water frogs recently took flight from Santiago to Calama. They were carefully sandwiched between wet towels in temperature-controlled containers. This relocation marks a crucial step in conserving these unique amphibians.
Once on the brink of extinction in 2019, these frogs faced severe habitat loss. Water extraction from mining, agriculture, and climate change devastated their environment. Conservationists managed to rescue the few remaining frogs, relocating 60 and nurturing 14 at Parquemet Zoo in Santiago. Under the guidance of herpetologist Osvaldo Cabeza, these frogs thrived, reaching a peak population of 500.
Cabeza emphasised the urgency of restoring their natural habitat. “If we fail to recover this environment, extinction looms,” he said. He stressed that collaboration among various sectors is essential for the frogs' survival. "Joint efforts are vital to recover their environment," he added.

Hope for the Future of Loa Water Frogs
In response, state-run copper giant Codelco and local officials recently inaugurated El Loa Biodiversity and Conservation Center (CENByC) in Calama. “The frog is a survivor,” remarked Francisca Oliva, the centre's coordinator. “It has shown remarkable resilience to harsh conditions.”
At the new centre, scientists aim to support and encourage frog reproduction. They envision bringing these frogs back to their natural habitat soon. For now, the government has established a protected area in Calama. Their goal is to collaborate with companies and citizens to restore and protect this fragile ecosystem.
