Lemurs in Madagascar face a new, deadly threat. Researchers reveal many are hunted secretly for meat. Urban demand fuels the hidden trade across the island. This adds a major risk beyond habitat loss alone. The scientists warn urgent action is needed to protect species. The study highlights alarming patterns in lemur consumption nationwide.

Hidden Threats to Lemurs

Lemurs in Madagascar are facing a decline in its population. Around 13,000 lemurs are killed annually for meat. Brown lemurs and ruffed lemurs are the most hunted. Urban demand drives consumption as “luxury” exotic meat. Much of this trade occurs secretly through trusted networks. Only a small fraction reaches restaurants or public markets.

Uncovering the Lemur Crisis

Australian and Malagasy researchers led the investigation jointly. They used field interviews and data analysis for insights. Peer-reviewed research confirms that the consumption of lemur is widespread and systematic. The conservationists called it an urgent "wake-up call".

The research emphasised on enforcement and public awareness as immediate priorities. These findings highlight the hidden wildlife trade which threatens the survival of this species.

Where the Danger is Worst?

The study surveyed 17 cities across Madagascar extensively. Researchers interviewed 2,600 hunters, buyers and restaurant staff. More than one-third of surveyed cities consume lemur meat regularly. The remote towns show smaller trade compared with major urban areas. The hidden network makes enforcement and monitoring very difficult.

Only Conservation Can Save this Species

Protecting habitats and enforcing anti-hunting laws is essential. Dealing with this issue requires more than standard conservation efforts. They recommend stricter enforcement of firearm and hunting laws immediately. Timely action can prevent further population collapse in lemurs. The study underscores human impact on rare species survival.
