The Orionid meteor shower will peak overnight from 20 to 21 October 2025, providing an incredible sight. Unlike many meteor showers that best viewed later in the night, the Orionids put on a show in the early morning, which is an incentive for eager skywatchers to get an early start.

This meteor shower also gives you the chance to watch fast-moving bright meteors as they fall through the night sky, providing a hint of the constant flow of debris that crosses Earth's orbit.

When to Watch

The Orionids occur annually between 2 October and 7 November, peaking on the night of 20–21 October. During these dates, Earth crosses a trail of dusty debris shed by Halley's Comet during the many previous times it has orbited the Sun. Because Halley's Comet debris enters the atmosphere at a high speed, many little meteors burn up creating the glowing trails of light that the Orionids are known for.

Where to Watch

Participants should face the northern skies, especially the constellation Orion, near its raised club. The meteor shower's radiant or point of origin is near the bright star Betelgeuse, but meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. Viewing Recommendations

To best view the Orionids, find a dark site, away from artificial lights and spend 20–30 minutes letting your eyes adjust. No special equipment is needed because you can see the meteors without binoculars or telescopes.
