NASA has detected two asteroids, 2024 XY5 and 2024 XB6, approaching Earth on December 16. Despite being “near misses,” experts confirm there’s no danger to the planet.

Details of Asteroid 2024 XY5
Asteroid 2024 XY5 measures 71 feet, similar to a large aircraft. It will make its closest approach to Earth at 12:26 AM IST on December 16. Travelling at 10,805 miles per hour, it will pass within 2,180,000 miles of Earth. That’s about 16 times the distance between Earth and the Moon. Scientists emphasise there’s no reason for concern.

Asteroid 2024 XB6 Zooms Past Earth
NASA has also identified asteroid 2024 XB6, which is slightly smaller at 56 feet in diameter. This asteroid will race past Earth at 14,780 miles per hour. Its closest approach will be around 4,150,000 miles away, ensuring there’s no immediate threat to Earth.

Why Asteroids Matter to Scientists
Asteroids like 2024 XY5 are ancient space rocks, dating back 4.6 billion years. They are remnants from the early solar system, offering vital clues about Earth’s origins and cosmic history. Past events, like the asteroid impact that caused the dinosaur extinction, underscore why monitoring such objects is crucial. Tracking their movements helps scientists prepare for potential risks.

Advanced Technology for Planetary Defence
NASA uses advanced systems to monitor near-Earth objects (NEOs). The Jet Propulsion Laboratory employs radar technology to calculate asteroid paths accurately. Missions such as OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2 have even returned asteroid samples to Earth. These studies provide insights into how life may have started on our planet.

By observing asteroids like 2024 XY5, scientists deepen their understanding of space while working to keep Earth safe from potential future impacts.
