A new 30-second video from NASA’s Curiosity rover offers a surprising sight: a landscape that could pass for an Arizona desert yet lies on Mars. Filmed from the lower slopes of Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater, the panorama shows quiet ridges and distant peaks that are actually the crater’s ancient rim, carved billions of years ago by a massive impact. The rover recorded the view while exploring the sulfate-bearing unit, a zone rich in salty minerals left behind by evaporating streams and ponds. Those deposits help scientists trace Mars’s transition from a wetter, milder planet to the frozen desert it is today.

Clues in Sulfates and Salts

Curiosity has travelled more than twenty miles across Martian soil since landing in 2012, covering 352 million miles in space since its 2011 launch. Along the way, its wheels exposed pure elemental sulphur, a substance on Earth often linked to volcanic processes or even microbial life, adding intrigue to the planet’s past habitability. The rover’s next destination is a terrain nicknamed “boxwork,” where mineral ridges weave web-like patterns across the ground. Geologists think the features formed when the last trickles of Martian water deposited minerals within rock cracks, preserving evidence of the planet’s final hospitable era.
