An exciting discovery beneath Earth’s surface offers energy hope. A study in Science Advances reveals 6.2 trillion tons of hydrogen trapped underground. This discovery could meet energy demands for 200 years.

The study, titled "Model Predictions of Global Geologic Hydrogen Resources," was published on December 13. It estimates the hydrogen reserve to be 26 times larger than known oil deposits. Despite this, the exact locations of these reserves remain unknown.

Hydrogen, a light and abundant element, shows immense energy potential. Governments are exploring it as a cleaner alternative to oil and gas. According to the study, hydrogen may meet 30 per cent of energy needs by 2050. Demand is projected to grow fivefold within three decades.

"The global hydrogen demand could hit 500 Mt yearly by 2050," the study noted. "Extracting just 2% of this reserve would satisfy demands for 200 years."

Previous Assumptions Challenged
For years, experts believed hydrogen escaped through rock pores. The study challenges this notion with evidence of underground reservoirs. Examples include discoveries in Albanian chromium mines and West Africa.

Geoffrey Ellis, lead author and a US Geological Survey geochemist, told Live Science, "The findings surprised us. There’s more hydrogen than we imagined." He added, "We don’t need external energy sources; it’s stored underground."

A Promising Energy Shift
Hydrogen is gaining traction for its potential to replace fossil fuels. Unlike blue or green hydrogen, natural hydrogen doesn’t require additional energy or storage solutions.

Ellis emphasised, "Storage isn’t an issue with natural hydrogen reservoirs." However, the primary challenge remains economic feasibility. Developing cost-effective extraction methods is vital to attract investment.

The discovery brings optimism but requires further exploration. Scientists must locate reserves and address technical challenges. This development could mark a pivotal step in global energy evolution.
