Imagine a world where continents are not what they seem. A new study suggests Earth may have six continents, not seven. Even more astonishing, North America and Europe might still be connected.
Continents That May Not Be Fully Separated
For years, scientists believed continents split millions of years ago. The Atlantic Ocean was thought to separate North America and Europe. However, researchers led by Dr Jordan Phethean at the University of Derby challenge this. Their findings show the continents are still stretching apart.
Using advanced geological techniques, the team discovered something surprising. The tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia may not be fully divided. This raises the possibility of a hidden supercontinent in plain sight.

Iceland’s Unique Role in this Discovery
Iceland, a volcanic island, holds vital clues about this theory. Previously considered a hotspot formation, it’s now seen as a geological connector. Iceland and the Greenland-Iceland-Faroes Ridge share features of two tectonic plates. This suggests they form a larger structure connecting continents.
Dr Phethean calls this a “Rifted Oceanic Magmatic Plateau.” The findings point to Iceland being part of a hidden continental landmass. This reshapes how we understand geography and tectonic movement.
What’s Next for Earth’s Geography?
If proven correct, this study could change global maps. The seven-continent model may become a six-continent framework. Researchers also suggest these tectonic connections affect future land movements.
Dr Phethean’s earlier research hinted at a submerged proto-continent near Greenland. This discovery supports the idea of Earth’s shifting landmasses. Understanding these movements could help predict future geological changes.
As research continues, Earth’s geography may hold more secrets. This study, published in Gondwana Research, challenges traditional views and invites further exploration.
