Declining day-by-day! Magellanic penguins in Patagonia faces predation from Pumas

Returning pumas in Patagonia are killing thousands of Magellanic penguins. Scientists are studying how this unexpected predator threat could reshape coastal ecosystems and conservation strategies.

  • Magellanic penguins in Patagonia face new threat from returning pumas.
  • Over 7,000 adult penguins killed by pumas in Monte León National Park since 2007.
  • Scientists urge long-term monitoring as predation and other pressures increase.

Magellanic penguins in Patagonia are facing a newly emerging threat. Their population is declining day by day. For decades, mainland penguins were safe from land predators. Things changed when pumas returned to coastal habitat. Scientists have documented a sudden increase in penguin killings. This has raised alarm among conservationists and ecologists. Magellanic penguins breed and nest on mainland beaches here.

What is happening in Patagonia?

Magellanic penguins breed and nest on mainland beaches here. Without large carnivores around, they lived relatively undisturbed. But when Pumas began stalking landward from forests, suddenly penguins have a powerful new predator to fear.

Scientists recorded puma attacks along Monte León National Park. From 2007-2010, over 7,000 adult penguins were killed. Many of those were not fully eaten by pumas.

Pumas Return After Long Absence

Pumas, also called mountain lions, were absent for years. Human activities, especially cattle ranching, pushed them away. When ranching declined, pumas moved back into old territory. This includes areas near penguin colonies on the coast. The change has reshaped predator-prey interactions unexpectedly.

How Many Penguins Are Left?

Exact population numbers of penguins in the region vary. Magellanic penguins are listed as "Least Concern" globally. Yet local populations face strong pressure from multiple threats. Over 7,000 adults were killed by pumas in three years. Scientists fear more penguins may fall victim with time. Breeding colonies may shrink if young survival remains low. Global pressures like climate change and fishing compound risks too.

What Is Scientists’ Take on This?

Scientists monitoring Monte León National Park documented the pattern. The return of a top predator has unpredictable effects. Seeing pumas feed on seabirds is behaviour not seen before. Experts from the University of Oxford analysed predation data. Their work revealed patterns of puma attacks on penguins.

Scientists caution that predation alone may not mean extinction. They say other pressures must be measured alongside predation. Conservationists say long-term monitoring is vital in Patagonia.
