The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which took 46 years to reach its 100th mission, is now setting its sights on an even more ambitious goal—achieving 200 space launches within the next five years. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan expressed confidence that the agency could double its achievements in a fraction of the time, given its rapid advancements and growing launch capabilities.
ISRO’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, evolving from an era where rocket components were transported on bicycles and bullock carts to becoming one of the world’s leading space agencies. Over the years, India’s space program has expanded into deep-space exploration, commercial satellite launches, and interplanetary missions, putting it in an elite league of space-faring nations.
On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, ISRO successfully completed its 100th mission with the GSLV-F15/NVS-02 launch, a part of the NavIC constellation that enhances terrestrial, aerial, and maritime navigation while supporting precision agriculture and disaster management. This mission marked a significant milestone, demonstrating ISRO’s ability to execute complex satellite placements with precision.
When asked whether ISRO could execute 100 more missions in just five years, Chairman Narayanan told PTI, "It is possible." This reflects ISRO’s growing technical capabilities, industrial collaborations, and increasing launch frequency.
Since its first experimental launch in 1979 with the SLV-3 E1/Rohini payload, ISRO has built six generations of launch vehicles, lifted 548 satellites into orbit, and launched 120 tonnes of payload, including 433 foreign satellites.
Upcoming Missions: NISAR, Gaganyaan, and NGLV
Looking ahead, ISRO is gearing up for several major missions, including:
NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) Mission: A collaborative mission between NASA and ISRO, featuring dual-frequency radars (L-band from ISRO and S-band from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory). The satellite has been integrated and tested at the U R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru and will soon be transported to Sriharikota for launch in the coming months.
India’s Navigation Satellite System Expansion: ISRO is actively working on expanding its regional navigation satellite constellation. Currently, four satellites are operational, with the fifth (NVS-02) launched aboard GSLV-F15. Three more navigation satellites have been approved, with one set for launch within six months.
Next-Generation Launch Vehicles (NGLV): These newly approved launch systems will be capable of carrying payloads of 20 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and 10 tonnes to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). The Rs 4,000 crore third launch pad project will support heavy-lift rockets for deep-space missions like Chandrayaan 4 & 5.
Kulasekarapatinam Rocket Launch Site: Construction is currently underway for a new launch complex in Tamil Nadu. ISRO expects regular launches from this site within two years.
ISRO is also ramping up its commercial operations through NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), with an upcoming LVM3 launch for a foreign customer. Additionally, the agency is preparing a Technology Demonstration Satellite (TDS-01) mission, which will validate 34 new technologies and will be launched using the first PSLV built by an industry consortium.
Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Program
India’s highly anticipated Gaganyaan mission is progressing steadily. The uncrewed G1 mission is in advanced preparation stages, with additional experiments planned for 2024 as part of India’s roadmap to send astronauts into space.
The Future of India’s Space Ambitions
With an expanding fleet of advanced launch vehicles, a strong commercial presence in the global satellite market, and ambitious deep-space exploration plans, ISRO is well-positioned to achieve its 200-mission target by 2029.
The next five years could mark a new era in India’s space dominance, making ISRO a global leader in space exploration, commercial launches, and scientific innovation.
