Aurora chasers are eagerly awaiting the possibility of northern lights. From January 24 to 25, minor geomagnetic storm conditions are expected. The solar storm, also known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), erupted on January 21. It’s now set to strike Earth, sparking potential aurora displays in the northern hemisphere.
Solar Storm Expected to Reach Earth
The CME, launched by the Sun, is expected to cause a glancing blow on January 24-25. This could trigger minor geomagnetic storm conditions in some areas. The Northern Lights may be visible in places like northern Michigan and Maine. According to NOAA, the Kp index is expected to peak at 5.33, indicating G1 geomagnetic storm conditions.
Heads up aurora chasers! CME INBOUND! Here is the NOAA SWPC ENLIL model for the CME from the M1.3 flare & filament eruption today. We have arrival at 3 UTC (+/-7h) on Jan 25th (Saturday). Kp 5-6 possible! This is nice timing for NA chasers. Get the camera batteries charged! pic.twitter.com/GwAMDloZDB

What Are Geomagnetic Storms and the Northern Lights?
When CMEs collide with Earth's magnetosphere, charged particles are released. These particles collide with atmospheric gases, creating energy in the form of light. This leads to the awe-inspiring northern lights. The event could last through the night, from 10 p.m. EDT on January 24 to 4 a.m. EDT on January 25.
While G1 conditions are often minor, the storm could intensify. Space weather forecasts are known to change, so aurora chasers remain on high alert. Stay prepared for an unexpected, spectacular display of the auroras.
Though the weather is unpredictable, northern lights could put on an extraordinary show. Whether you’re a seasoned aurora chaser or a first-timer, keep an eye on the skies. You never know when the celestial light show will begin!
