The galaxy is named VV 340a by astronomers. It is located in a distant interacting galaxy system. The system is undergoing a dramatic cosmic merger event. Such mergers often trigger intense black hole activity. VV 340a still maintains a classic spiral shape. This makes the discovery especially unusual and significant.

"To our knowledge, this is the first time we have seen a kiloparsec, or galactic-scale, precessing radio jet driving a massive coronal gas outflow," says astrophysicist Justin Kader of the University of California, Irvine.
