Arctic records as "hottest year ever" as temperatures surge far above average

The Arctic has recorded its hottest year on record, with temperatures soaring far above average and sea ice shrinking to historic lows, scientists warn of accelerating climate impacts.

The Arctic has just experienced its warmest year ever recorded. Scientists say the region is heating at an alarming pace. The findings raise fresh concerns about climate stability and global impacts.

A Record-Breaking Year of Heat in Arctic

According to the latest Arctic Report Card, the period from October 2024 to September 2025 was the hottest on record. Average Arctic temperatures were 1.6°C above the 1991–2020 baseline.

This marked a clear and troubling new high. The year included the warmest autumn ever measured in the Arctic. Scientists say sustained heat across seasons signals a deepening trend.

Why the Arctic Is Warming Faster?

The Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the global average. This process is known as Arctic amplification. Melting sea ice exposes darker ocean water, which absorbs more heat and accelerates warming further. Winter ranked as the second warmest, while summer placed third warmest in the long-term record.

Sea Ice Hits Dangerous Lows

Spring sea ice reached its lowest maximum extent in 47 years of satellite observations. Less ice means reduced habitat for polar bears, seals and walruses. It also weakens the Arctic’s ability to reflect sunlight back into space.

Reduced ice and rising temperatures can disrupt jet streams, influence extreme weather and affect ecosystems far beyond the polar region. Scientists warn these changes may amplify heatwaves, floods and storms elsewhere.

Why Are Scientists Alarmed?

Researchers say the latest record underscores the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Arctic acts as an early warning system for planetary change. Its rapid warming signals risks that could soon affect the entire world. The Arctic’s hottest year on record is not an isolated event. It is part of a clear and accelerating climate trend.
