Who Was Mata Karma? Meet The Lesser-Known Devotee of Lord Krishna

The Government of India’s Department of Posts has honoured Mata Karma, a revered saint, social reformer, and devoted follower of Lord Krishna, with a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the occasion of her 1009th birth anniversary. The prestigious event, held in Raipur on March 25, 2025, witnessed the esteemed presence of Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister, Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, alongside Union Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Tokhan Sahu, Members of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, and prominent members of the Akhil Bhartiya Tailik Mahasabha.

Honouring Mata Karma’s Devotion and Legacy

Mata Karma is celebrated for her unwavering faith and selfless service to Lord Krishna. According to tradition, she embarked on a spiritual journey to Jagannath Puri, where she was asked by the temple priests to prepare khichdi, a simple yet sacred offering. To her great joy, Lord Krishna accepted her offering, establishing a tradition that continues to be part of the Jagannath Temple’s rituals. The commemorative stamp beautifully captures this moment, depicting Mata Karma offering khichdi to Lord Krishna, with the iconic Jagannath Temple in the background.

A Symbol of Social Harmony and Empowerment

Beyond her deep devotion, Mata Karma was a beacon of social reform. She actively worked towards eliminating social evils such as untouchability and conservatism, advocating for women’s empowerment and social unity. Her contributions continue to inspire generations, serving as a reminder of the power of faith and social harmony.

Preserving Her Legacy

The release of this commemorative stamp by India Post is a significant tribute to Mata Karma’s legacy. Along with the stamp, associated philatelic items, including the First Day Cover (FDC) and Information Brochure, are now available for collectors and devotees at Philately Bureaus across India and online at www.epostoffice.gov.in.

By honouring Mata Karma, India Post not only preserves her remarkable contributions but also spreads awareness about her enduring spiritual and social impact on future generations.
