Shravan Maas 2025: When does the Shravan month begin? Fasting Dates, Rituals, and More Explained

The sacred month of Shravan Maas 2025, also known as the Sawan month, is one of the most important periods in the Hindu calendar, especially for devotees of Lord Shiva. This month is marked by devotion, fasting, and spiritual practices that bring peace, prosperity, and blessings. As millions prepare to observe this holy month, it is essential to know when Sawan begins, the fasting dates, key rituals, and the religious benefits associated with it.

When Does the Sawan Month Start in 2025?

According to the Vedic calendar, Shravan Maas will begin on July 11, 2025. The month follows Ashadha Purnima, which falls on July 10, lasting from 1:36 pm on July 10 to 2:06 pm on July 11. The first day of Shravan, known as Pratipada, will officially start from 11:07 pm on July 11 and continue until 2:08 pm on July 12. This marks the commencement of the spiritually significant Sawan month.

Sawan Puja Rituals

The entire month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva and observed with great reverence by his devotees. While daily worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is common during this time, Sawan Mondays hold special importance. Devotees fast and perform rituals such as offering water, milk, and Belpatra (bilva leaves) to the Shivling, followed by Jalabhishek (holy water bathing ceremony).

It is widely believed that fasting and worship on Sawan Mondays please Lord Shiva quickly and bring fulfillment of wishes. This devotion is said to remove life’s troubles and bring happiness and peace.

Shravan Maas Significance

Shravan Maas falls within the period of Chaturmas, a four-month phase when Lord Vishnu is believed to enter Yognidra (divine sleep) in the Kshir Sagar (cosmic ocean). During this time, Lord Shiva is said to take charge of the universe. Chaturmas is known for penance, fasting, and religious observances, making the month of Sawan especially sacred.

Important Fasting Dates: Sawan Mondays in 2025

Devotees observe fasts every Monday during Shravan. The key fasting dates this year are:

  • July 14 – First Sawan Monday
  • July 21 – Second Sawan Monday
  • July 28 – Third Sawan Monday
  • August 4 – Fourth and last Sawan Monday

Observing fast on these days is believed to invoke Lord Shiva’s blessings and grant spiritual merit.

How to Perform Sawan Worship?

To honor Lord Shiva during Shravan, devotees follow a detailed worship ritual:

  • Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn), bathe, and wear clean clothes.
  • Clean the house and the prayer area thoroughly. Sprinkle Ganga water around.
  • Offer Ganga water and raw milk to the Shivling, followed by washing it with pure water.
  • Present Belpatra (bilva leaves), dhatura flowers, white flowers, sacred ash (vibhuti), sweets, and cow’s milk.
  • Chant the mantra Om Namah Shivaya 108 times. Alternatively, recite the 108 names of Lord Shiva.
  • Recite the Shiva Chalisa and conclude with Shiva Aarti.
  • Pray with folded hands, seeking happiness, prosperity, and peace.
  • This disciplined worship is believed to quickly please Lord Shiva, who blesses his devotees generously.

Religious Benefits

Shravan Maas holds immense religious significance. Devotees believe that offering water, milk, and Belpatra on the Shivling destroys sins and purifies the soul. Fasting on Sawan Mondays is especially powerful, fulfilling wishes and promoting marital harmony. The month encourages meditation, chanting, fasting, and charity, which together lead to spiritual cleansing and positive transformation. It is a time for physical, mental, and spiritual upliftment, making Shravan Maas one of the most auspicious periods for devotees.

Special Yoga of Shravan: Shivavas Yoga

A unique yogic alignment called Shivavas Yoga occurs on the first day of Sawan. It symbolizes Lord Shiva seated with Mother Parvati on Mount Kailash. Worship during this yoga is believed to bring luck, prosperity, and fulfillment of desires. Performing Jalabhishek and prayers in this auspicious yoga is highly recommended.

Shravan Maas 2025 offers a sacred opportunity to deepen one’s spiritual practice through fasting, worship, and prayer dedicated to Lord Shiva. Knowing the start date, fasting schedule, and correct rituals helps devotees maximize the blessings of this holy month. As you prepare to observe Sawan with full faith, may the divine grace of Lord Shiva bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to your life.
