Purnima Vrat Katha: Story of Brahmin Dhaneshwara and His Son Devdas

Purnima Vrat Katha: In Hindu tradition, the day of Purnima holds a very sacred place. It is believed that observing Purnima Vrat with devotion brings happiness, peace, prosperity and protection from all obstacles. This vrat is considered especially auspicious for women, as it blesses them with marital happiness, good fortune and long life for their husbands.

Lord Krishna once narrated this katha to Mata Yashoda.

In the famous Kantika Nagar, a Brahmin named Dhaneshwara lived with his devoted wife Roopvati. They were wealthy but saddened by the absence of a child. One day, a holy saint came to the town seeking alms. He accepted food from every house except theirs. Hurt by this, the Brahmin asked the reason. The saint replied that he could not accept alms from a childless home.

Deeply distressed, Dhaneshwara prayed for a solution. The saint advised him to worship Goddess Chandika and observe the Purnima Vrat, lighting 32 lamps, one more each day until the full moon.

Dhaneshwara followed the instructions with great devotion. Blessed by the Goddess, Roopvati soon gave birth to a beautiful son, who was lovingly named Devdas.

Devdas’ Destiny and Divine Protection

When Devdas grew up, he was sent to Kashi for studies along with his uncle. On their way, a wedding procession was encountered. The groom fell ill suddenly, and to save the ceremony, the family requested that Devdas become the groom for a short while. Under sacred rites, a marriage took place.

Later, Devdas told his bride about his short lifespan. The bride, strong in devotion, vowed to stay with him forever, whether in joy or sorrow. Before departing, he gave her a ring and requested her to plant a small garden. The state of the flowers would reflect his life. If the flowers dried, it meant he was in trouble.

In Kashi, when the time of his death approached, a venomous snake attempted to bite Devdas but failed. His mother’s vrat protected him. Later, when Yama arrived to take his life, Goddess Parvati requested Lord Shiva to save him. By their grace, Devdas received his life back.

At the same time, his bride saw that the flowers in her garden had dried and then bloomed again. She knew her husband was alive and safe. Soon, Devdas returned home, and the entire family celebrated with joy.

Lord Krishna concludes this story by saying that any woman who observes the Purnima Vrat with faith will always be blessed with suhag, wealth and protection throughout her life.

Purnima Vrat is considered a powerful source of blessings. Devotees who pray with a sincere heart are protected from danger and blessed with joy, prosperity and divine support. The vrat not only strengthens one’s faith but also ensures peace and fortune in every household.

Those who observe this sacred vrat with devotion earn the grace of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Vishnu, and their wishes are fulfilled.
