Lord Ganesha’s Kheer Story: Karwa Chauth is a time when devotees recall the tales of Hindu deities and their divine interventions. One such story is of Lord Ganesha and Budhiya Mai, highlighting faith, devotion, and the miraculous blessings that follow sincere worship. This tale, often shared during Karwa Chauth and other religious occasions, reflects Ganesha Ji’s love for devotion over material offerings.
The Story of Budhiya Mai and Lord Ganesha
Once, Lord Ganesha, taking the form of a child, came down to Earth. Holding a pinch of rice and a spoon of milk, he asked everyone he met, “Someone make kheer (sweet rice pudding) for me, someone make kheer for me!” People laughed, thinking he was a mere child, and ignored him.
An old woman, known as Budhiya Mai, responded kindly. She asked for his name, and upon hearing that it was Ganesha, she agreed to make kheer for him. She attempted to cook it in a small pot, but the milk curdled and the rice burned.
Lord Ganesha then advised her to cook the kheer in a large pot, taking a bath and offering prayers with devotion. The next day, following his instructions, Budhiya Mai made the kheer perfectly.

When Ganesha Ji appeared and tasted the kheer, he said that he was hungry for devotion and love, not food. He instructed Budhiya Mai to distribute the kheer throughout the town and place some at the four corners of her house. Following this, her humble home turned into a prosperous place, and her grain and wealth multiplied.
The villagers, witnessing the miracle, praised Budhiya Mai’s pure faith and devotion. They recognized that true devotion, faith, and service to God are rewarded with divine blessings and abundance. Lord Ganesha’s intervention showed that sincere worship and selfless love bring prosperity and happiness.
