What is Attukal Pongala?

Attukal Pongala is a 10-day festival that begins on the Karthigai star in the Malayalam months of Makaram or Kumbham. The festival concludes with Kuruthitharpanam, a ritualistic sacrificial offering performed at night.

Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam

The most significant day of the festival is the ninth day, when the famous Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam takes place. Millions of women gather around the temple premises and streets to prepare the sacred Pongala—a special offering of rice, jaggery, coconut, and ghee, cooked in earthen pots. It is believed that preparing this offering with devotion brings prosperity and divine blessings.

Attukal Pongala is often referred to as the largest congregation of women devotees in the world. The festival symbolises feminine power (Shakti), devotion, and community unity.
