Significance of Karadaiyan Nombu

Karadaiyan Nombu marks the transition of the Tamil month Maasi to Panguni, coinciding with Meena Sankramana, the moment when the Sun moves from Kumbha Rashi (Aquarius) to Meena Rashi (Pisces) in the Hindu calendar. This auspicious day is dedicated to Goddess Gowri and is observed by married and unmarried women alike.

The festival is inspired by the legend of Savitri and Satyavan from Hindu mythology. It is believed that on this day, Savitri's unwavering devotion and determination brought her husband, Satyavan, back to life from the clutches of Yama, the God of Death. This powerful story symbolizes marital devotion, strength, and faith, making Karadaiyan Nombu also known as Savitri Nombu Vratham.

Rituals and Traditions

  • Fasting and Worship: Married women observe a fast, praying for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. Unmarried girls observe the fast to seek an ideal husband in the future.
  • Tying the Sacred Thread: After offering prayers to Goddess Gowri, women tie a sacred yellow cotton thread known as Manjal Saradu or Nonbu Charadu around their neck as a mark of devotion.
  • Offering Special Nivedyam: The festival is named after Karadai, a special dish prepared using rice flour, jaggery, and black-eyed peas. This Nivedyam is offered to Goddess Gowri before breaking the fast.
  • Wearing Yellow Attire: Women and young girls wear traditional yellow garments as a sign of devotion and auspiciousness.
Fasting and Puja

The fast is observed from sunrise on the transition day and continues until the time of Meena Sankramana. The fast-breaking time varies based on local sunrise and Sankramana moment, falling anytime between the current day’s sunrise and the next day’s sunrise.

Karadaiyan Nombu is a festival of faith, devotion, and marital bliss, deeply rooted in Hindu traditions. It signifies the strength of a woman’s devotion and prayers, symbolizing the power of unwavering faith. Whether seeking the longevity of a spouse or the blessing of an ideal life partner, this festival remains an important occasion in Tamil households.

Women across Tamil Nadu and beyond observe this sacred Vratham with great reverence, reinforcing the values of commitment, love, and spiritual devotion in their lives.
