Who is Goddess Annapurna?

Goddess Annapurna is worshipped as the provider of food and nourishment. She ensures that no devotee suffers from hunger or scarcity. Her most famous temple is located in Varanasi (Kashi) where she is revered as a form of Goddess Parvati and the divine consort of Lord Shiva.

Annapurna Jayanti: Significance

According to Hindu scriptures such as Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana, food is a divine blessing, not just a basic need. Goddess Annapurna teaches that Anna (food) is life itself, and feeding others is the greatest form of charity.

A sacred legend associated with this festival narrates how Lord Shiva once declared the world to be Maya. In response, Goddess Parvati removed food from the universe. The entire world faced famine until Lord Shiva realized that food is not an illusion but the essence of life. She then appeared as Annapurna and fed the people of Kashi.

This signifies that prosperity comes with gratitude and sharing.

Devotees wake up before sunrise, take a holy bath and worship Goddess Annapurna with pure devotion:

  • Offer grains, fruits, flowers, Naivedya, Diya and water
  • Recite Annapurna Stotram and Vishnu-Sahasranama
  • Perform Anna-Daan by donating food, grains and clothes

In Varanasi, a grand Annakshetra (community feast) is organised at the Annapurna Temple. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva Himself accepts alms from Goddess Annapurna, highlighting the divine importance of food.
