5.46-ha-into-public-space_Taiwan_MVRDV_Tainan-City-Government_dezeen_1568_0Taiwan’s city Tainan is ready to replace the flooded shopping center with a lagoon to create a “hip urban pool” and artificial beach. This revolution would be created by the Dutch architecture studio MVRDV. Construction is expected to begin later this year. The lagoon will stretch out of the city’s waterfront opening up the views of the sea that was previously blocked by the China Town Mall. The shopping mall’s underground parking area would be the lagoon. The remnants of the concrete structure will protrude above the water surface. Also, there will be an artificial beach along the lagoon which will house some of the indigenous plants and playgrounds and rows of shops. A steel bridge will link two street-level walkways. It would also give the visitors the opportunity to view the park from the glass covered lifts which would connect the park with the streets. These structures would be illuminated during the night to give the appearance of giant lanterns. Also, by night the cafes would spill out onto the streets. To achieve this, new transport routes would be created to free the area from heavy traffic and nearby roads. The perpendicular Haian Road will be converted into parkland. After diminishing the mall the city would celebrate the view of the sea which was earlier obstructed by the mall.
