Angela Merkel to visit India next wk; to revive FTA talks

The two countries are working to take up several issues, including India-EU FTA, skills development, Make-in-India campaign, defence production, railways, renewable energy and trade and commerce.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will touchdown in India on Monday Octobe 5 for a two day visit. While Merkel will exchange notes with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several bilateral issues and these parleys could see some hard talk by the chancellor on trade and investment bottlenecks faced by German companies in India.

German chancellor Angela Merkel and 6 members of her cabinet will meet Prime Minister Modi and his team of ministers on Monday the October 5 for inter-governmental consultations - the third edition of government to government talks conducted by India and Germany.

Bilateral trade between both the nations stand at USD 58.5 billion and 1700 German companies have invested over euro 8 billion in the country. But German companies are not satisfied with the pace of reforms in India.
Chancellor Merkel is expected to raise their concerns with PM Modi.

Germany has been one of the biggest proponents of the India-EU FTA, which New Delhi has put on the pause mode. Merkel is expected to push the pm to jumpstart trade talks.

Merkel's visit is important to not just for investment flows but also to revive the stalled EU-India.

Modi and Merkel will leave for it city Bengaluru on Tuesday, where they will jointly address business leaders in a session hosted by Nasscom. Meanwhile in Delhi, several big ticket business pacts are expected to be inked. With Volkswagen's diesel gate capturing global headlines, the iconic German company won’t find space in Merkel's mega delegation.

According to the itinerary released by Karnataka government, both the leaders will be visiting the Bosch Factory at Adugodi here and share the dais at a NASSCOM event.

Merkel will be arriving in India on October 4 on a three-day visit during which she will hold comprehensive talks with Modi on key bilateral and international issues including trade and security situation in the region.

The German Chancellor will be arriving here on October 5 to the event and leave for Germany in the afternoon the next day.

The Prime Minister will arrive on October 6 and leave for New Delhi the same day, an official release said.
