Angela Merkel says not pushing Portugal into EU rescue

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday that Germany is not trying to goad Portugal into accepting a European Union bailout and would not do so in the future either.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday that Germany is not trying to goad Portugal into accepting a European Union bailout and would not do so in the future either.

"We never pushed countries into doing something and we will not do this either," she told reporters during a visit to Malta. Eurozone member states would have to decide on their own whether they require help, she added.
