A viral video by an Instagram creator has once again sparked a long-running debate over auto-rickshaw fares and passenger harassment, especially at key transit hubs like Majestic. The video calls out what the creator describes as aggressive behaviour by some auto drivers who refuse to use meters and demand inflated fares from commuters.
The creator, Ankit, shared his experience after getting down from a bus at Majestic, one of the busiest transport interchanges in Bengaluru. In the clip, he is seen expressing frustration over how passengers, especially newcomers are approached by auto drivers demanding higher prices instead of following meter rates.
According to Ankit, a ride from Majestic to Bommanahalli was showing a fare of ₹250 on the Namma Yatri app. However, auto drivers at the stand allegedly insisted on charging “one and a half metre” fares, a practice often criticised by commuters. “Everyone kept repeating the same thing. I don’t understand why this is still happening,” he said in the video.
He went on to argue that such conduct creates a poor first impression of the city. Ankit said some drivers aggressively approach passengers the moment they step out of the station and even pressure them to speak in the local language. Calling the experience unpleasant and intimidating, he said the issue is fixable if authorities ensure strict enforcement of meter-based travel. “This is a beautiful city, but this behaviour needs to change,” he added.
Internet agrees with creator
The video went viral, with many users sharing similar experiences in the comments. Several people said the situation around Majestic has remained unchanged for years, with some alleging instances of app-based drivers being harassed or assaulted near auto stands. Others pointed out that drivers using ride-hailing apps often avoid pickups near these areas to prevent confrontations.
Others echoed Ankit’s concerns, saying they have faced similar problems despite being long-time residents. They argued that with a large section of the population relying on public transport, there is little justification for demanding excessive fares. Many called on authorities to bring back clear fare cards or introduce stricter regulation to curb overcharging and restore trust in last-mile connectivity.
