The CIBIL score is a three-digit number ranging from 300 to 900, issued by TransUnion CIBIL.

A wedding in Maharashtra’s Murtizapur was abruptly called off—not due to familial disagreements or compatibility concerns, but because the groom’s CIBIL score failed to meet the bride’s family’s expectations.

According to a report in The Times of India, both families had gathered to finalise the match when the bride’s uncle made an unexpected request—he wanted to check the groom’s CIBIL score. Upon reviewing his financial history, he discovered that the groom had taken out multiple loans from various banks and had a poor credit rating, raising concerns about his financial stability.

A low CIBIL score is often seen as an indication of irregular payments, loan defaults, and financial mismanagement. Alarmed by the findings, the bride’s uncle strongly opposed the marriage, arguing that a man already burdened with debt would struggle to provide stability for his wife. His concerns were shared by the rest of the family, leading them to call off the wedding.

The CIBIL score is a three-digit number ranging from 300 to 900, issued by TransUnion CIBIL, a credit information company regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It reflects an individual’s creditworthiness, factoring in their history of loan repayments, credit card usage, and borrowing behaviour.

A score above 750 is considered ideal, offering easier loan approvals and lower interest rates, while a lower score can result in loan rejections or higher borrowing costs. Factors influencing the score include timely repayments, credit mix, length of credit history, and credit utilisation ratio. To maintain a healthy credit score, financial experts recommend paying EMIs and credit card bills on time, avoiding excessive debt, and limiting multiple loan inquiries.

This is not the first time a wedding has been cancelled over unexpected circumstances. Earlier, in Bengaluru, a bride’s family called off a wedding after the inebriated groom created chaos during the ceremony. The situation escalated when he misbehaved and threw the aarti thali, prompting the bride’s mother to intervene and cancel the marriage.
