This post is especially for the people who feel that travel is life, for the explorer who travels miles and miles to discover a new land and for the ones who navigate through creeks and mountains just to feel and live the culture beyond his own land. If you have relaxed on the beaches a million times and have experienced all kinds of adventure sports, then your soul is probably seeking a destination that spells pure tranquillity.
One such remote destination which most tourists happen to overlook is Nagaland. Well that’s good news for us travellers. The lesser the crowd, better the experience. And the experience in Nagaland is truly an experience of a lifetime because it takes you beyond sightseeing, taking selfies and indulging in the luxuries of life.
The spirit of Nagaland is nurtured by its Naga culture. It’s an eccentric concoction of 16 major Naga tribes who have their own language and distinct customs and traditions. The people of Nagaland were great warriors in the previous centuries. Although 90 percent of Nagas have accepted Christianity as their religion, their lifestyle and traditions still reflects the ancient way of living.
If you have limited time to get acquainted with the Naga life then visit this place during the Hornbil Festival which is also known as the Festival of festivals, for obvious reasons. Nothing else looks as colourful and vibrant as Nagaland during this time. It’s a cultural extravaganza that showcases unmatched artistry of its folk in many forms. Tribal dance, music, plays, handicrafts and colourful costumes captivate your mind and imagination. In no time, you feel that you have always belonged to this place.
Nagas love to eat whatever nature provides and that includes the “insects”. Oh yes, don’t be surprised if you notice locals indulging in a slimy insect supper. Many local delicacies include snails, worms, eels, honeycombs, frogs, spiders and dog meat. You may not want to gulp down these creatures but you can indeed visit the “Keeda market” and capture some bizarre images. The best way to end this trip is by getting lost in its natural beauty and surroundings for a day or two. Nature lovers, head towards the Dzukou Valley and Japfu ranges. It’s lush green panoramic view is mesmerizing. The gigantic unkempt valley has a multitude of colours, and the scent of wild flowers will makes us, urbanites realize what we are missing on. Walking amidst these marvellous mountains very often leads to spiritual awakening and self realization; realization of how tiny we are. Journey to the land of the Nagas is a complete holistic experience that teaches you to treasure the simple things in life. And that’s why we call this place an ultimate bliss.
