Eat like a local: Must try bites in Cyprus

Thoughts of Cyprus conjure up images of the warm Mediterranean sunshine, picture-perfect coastlines and archaeological treasures steeped in history. But in order to fully appreciate and experience Cyprus, or any country for that matter, one has to head off the beaten track and away from commercialized “tourist hot-spots.”

What makes Cyprus so wonderful is the fact that it has been occupied by so many nations, who have left its influence on the culture and food. The Lebanese, the Turks, the Greek, the Roman and the Venetian have impacted Cypriot cuisine greatly. The locals love their food... and have good reason to. Read on as I let you in on some of the things you should definitely try if you ever find yourself in this island country.

Ever heard of Meze? You better be starving when you order it – it’s not just your ordinary snack, but a platter of around 20 -30 savouries and appetizers including feta cheese, ham, octopus, stuffed vine leaves, hummus, olives, barbouni, red mullet, pieces of turkey, chicken and much more. This Cypriot favourite is similar to the Spanish Tapas, and great for the indecisive.

Other popular meat dishes include Aflia (pork marinated in red wine and coriander seeds), Pisto (oven cooked meat and potatoes) and Lountza (smoked pork tenderloin friend with halloumi cheese or eggs.)

Kleftiko is a dish that’s a must at celebratory events. It consists of a piece of goat or lamb wrapped in foil and baked in a special oven, similar to the tandoor. There’s no doubt you have heard a dish called “Souvala” or “Souvlaki.” This mouth watering delicacy consists of chunks of meat (pork, lamb and chicken) skewered and grilled on the spit or barbeque over charcoal. The smoky flavour lends a delicious smell and taste to these kebabs. It is usually served on pita bread accompanied by Sheftaila or minced pork sausages and salad.

Common to many Mediterranean countries is Mousaka, a traditional baked dish prepared by layering sliced aubergines, zucchini and potatoes over minced beef or lamb. This hearty meal is topped with spiced cream and is a must-eat in Cyprus.

Similar to Italian ravioli, Cyprus has a dish called Ravioles – little pasta parcels stuffed with halloumi cheese and simmered in chicken broth. Although it bears physical resemblance to its Italian inspiration, this dish has a taste that’s unique to Cyprus alone.

Certain dishes have been passed down right from the Roman era. Take for example the Kolokasi and Poulles. Chunks of taro root are simmered with pork or chicken in a sauce of caramelised tomatoes, onions and celery with a generous infusion of lemon juice for that tangy hit.

While there’s a lot for meat-eaters in Cyprus, there’s a lot for vegetarians too. A popular Cypriot dish is called Yemista, consists of a delicious assortment of stuffed vegetables. You can eat it hot or cold, as starters or mains.

Isn’t it amazing how every culture shares a love for dessert? Cypriots have a huge sweet tooth. Popular desserts like Baklava in syrup and Daktila filled with nutty cinnamon are among the favourites. As a tourist, you simply must try the Loukoumia – deep friend pastry balls, like donuts, served sizzling hot and served in syrup. It’s divine!

Let me not forget to mention Pastekali – a sticky toffee made from carob bean juice and pressed with peanuts. This dish has a unique texture and requires skilful hands to prepare.

Are you tempted enough to visit yet? Cyprus has enough and more delicacies to keep your taste buds tingling with new flavours every single day. Go ahead and give your stomach something to thank you for.
