Suphalaam Technology, a venture started in 2009, developed a smart box that basically allows students to access all the study material on the go. They have sold about 1,500 smart boxes and they hope to start 60,000 by 2013.

This 3.5 inch touch screen, wi-fi enabled smart box comes pre loaded in multi-media content that allows students to access their study material on the go.

This is the brain child of 31 year old Purshottam Mishra, MD of Suphalaam Technologies. Suphalaam specializes in low cost customized hand held devices for the education sector.

Below is the verbatim transcript of Purshottam Mishra's interview with CNBC-TV18. Also watch the accompnaying video.

How feasible is this smart box for classrooms?

Mishra: The smart box itself has all the study modules. In terms of notes on each and every topic of the grade they are in. On each note there are more than 60-70 questions which are multiple choice questions that they can take on and not only they can take the quiz, but as they keep on taking quiz, they get a very good idea of how they have been performing.

This smart box device is as a part of school management and automation system as well. For eg, a school here in Bangalore gives homework and automatically through a server on the campus, homework is automatically transferred in these devices.

Partnering with integrated schools and private educational institutions for content, the smart box comes preloaded with study material for IIT-JEE, AIEEE and CET. Available in three different variants, Purshottam Smart Box ranges from Rs 3,000-5,000. Having already reached 1500 students across 30 private institutions, Purshottam now hopes to sell 60,000 smart boxes by 2013.

How big is the market with this smart innovation?

Mishra: I see three big areas of opportunities; first is a test paper sector, where there are currently around1 million to 2 million students across the country appearing for exams like IIT-JEE, AIEEE, CET and so on and so forth.

Second would be the English medium schools, such as CBSC, ICSE and international students and the number is between 10-20 million students. Who go through that education system.

Having started with initial investment of Rs 1 crore from family and friends, Purshottam is now looking at debt to grow his business. He is also in talks with angel investors to bring in a million dollar equity investment for the next two years. With a wide area of products in the pipeline, Purshottam hopes to break even by the end of the year.

Mishra: We have a product which will have a vedio capability as well which will be able to play a lot of videos freeware from internet as well as partner specific vedios, wi-fi and another things, so another version.

The other production pipelines are seven inch devices as well to cater to a particular customer, lead customer that we have.

We have a device which will cost around Rs 1,500 which is a very low end device and can be used for spoken English and literacy mission programs.
