A buffalo valued at Rs 23 crore has become the unlikely star of this year’s Pushkar Mela in Rajasthan, drawing crowds and disbelief from visitors and traders alike. The animal, named Anmol, is being showcased by its owner as a symbol of elite livestock breeding.
Held between October 30 and November 5, the Pushkar Mela is one of India’s largest and most iconic cattle fairs, blending rural trade, religious devotion, and cultural spectacle. This year, Anmol has captured attention not just for his size and appearance, but for his extravagant lifestyle.
“He is given special food every day which includes milk, desi ghee and dry fruits,” the owner told NDTV, adding that the buffalo’s upkeep rivals that of luxury pets. The valuation—Rs 23 crore—has sparked curiosity and scepticism, but also admiration for the animal’s grooming and pedigree.
Pushkar Mela: where livestock meets legend
Hosted by Rajasthan Tourism, the fair coincides with Kartik Purnima, a full moon day considered sacred in Hindu tradition. Devotees take a holy dip in Pushkar Lake, believed to cleanse sins and grant blessings. Alongside religious rituals, the fair features cattle trading, folk performances, and competitions.
Hundreds of traders have arrived to buy and sell camels, horses, goats, and lambs. Other notable animals this year include a horse reportedly worth Rs 7 crore and cows with unusually short statures, measuring just 16 inches.
