Once the hub of bustling parties and fancy brunches, Pune pubs and clubs are wearing a deserted look after the Porsche incident where a 17-year-old mowed down two software engineers in an inebriated state. The incident, which sparked massive outrage online, has been directly responsible for clubs and pubs in the Maharashtra city exercising greater caution in following the law.
Pune based entrepreneur and fitness influencer Chirag Barjatya shared a video of various pubs in the city looking empty after the Porsche incident. Barjatya said that the target crowd of these establishments – high school and college students – are no longer being allowed entry.
In Maharashtra, the legal drinking age is 25. This law, however, was hardly being followed until the outrage generated by the Porsche case, where the minor responsible for killing two software engineers was filming drinking at a pub before the accident. The 17-year-old reportedly spent Rs 48,000 at the pub before getting behind the wheel of his luxury car and speeding into two people who lost their lives in the accident.
“Pune clubs are empty. The crowd that used to party the most (high school kids and college kids) are not even being allowed to enter. They have stopped serving alcohol in the clubs except near the bar area. Even 40-50 years old people are being asked to show IDs for entry,” Barjatya, founder of PFC Club, wrote on X.
He followed this up with two videos of different pubs wearing a deserted look. Barjatya said that earlier, one would be hard pressed to gain entry to these establishments.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has said that the minor driving the Porsche was in his senses when the accident occurred on May 19.
"He (minor accused) was in his senses. It was not as if all of them were so drunk that they could not understand anything. They had full knowledge that due to their conduct, an incident like section 304 can happen," he said.
The teenager has been remanded to an observation home till June 5 and his father, a prominent builder, has been arrested.
