Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal informed a special court on Friday that the Mumbai-based JJ Hospital's medical report confirmed a diagnosis of malignant growths in the 74-year-old's body and sought an interim bail on medical grounds, an Indian Express report said.
Goyal's lawyer Aabad Ponda submitted the reports confirming the news and added that there would be no further treatment available for him in jail and his client had every right to undergo treatment at a private hospital.
"The accused has a right to be treated in a private hospital. He is in the twilight years of his life, and he deserves to get the treatment of his choice," the lawyer said.
The lawyer sought for a six-month medical bail for Goyal, who required medical treatment and a clean environment to recover after undergoing chemotherapy.
Ponda further said that after his client undergoes treatment, there would be hygiene issues and as a result, he could not live with other prisoners since the chances of infection were higher.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said that the Jet Airways founder can undergo treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital and can also visit the facility with police escorts. The court is likely to decide on the plea on Tuesday.
Goyal was arrested on September 1, 2023 by the ED which claimed that the 74-year-old had laundered money and siphoned off loans amounting to Rs 538.62 crore, which had been given to the airline carrier by Canara Bank. In January, the court allowed Goyal to take medical tests and procedures after health complications were identified.
