Originally designed to tackle Type 2 diabetes, Ozempic, also known as semaglutide, has caused a stir now and then for the past year as the latest weight loss craze in Tinseltown.

This pharmaceutical sensation gained sharp attention in August 2023 when a reported shortage resulted due to skyrocketing demand, according to Variety magazine. Hollywood's A-listers found themselves thrust into the limelight and controversy with some openly admitting to trying Ozempic, like Amy Schumer, while others, including Khloe Kardashian and Kyle Richards, vehemently denied any involvement.

Novo Nordisk, the drugmaker of Ozempic, emphasised its intended use for Type 2 diabetes treatment, blood sugar improvement and reducing cardiovascular risks for adults with the condition. Despite this, Ozempic's popularity for shedding pounds has soared among both celebrities and the general population.

But what exactly is Ozempic? It's the branded form of semaglutide, an FDA-approved drug initially crafted for diabetes treatment. However, the rise of "Ozempic face," a term coined by cosmetic dermatologist Dr Paul Jarrod Frank, highlights concerns about sagging facial skin due to rapid weight loss, particularly among individuals over 40.

Celebrities have shared diverse opinions on the Ozempic trend. While Raven-Symoné and Amy Schumer spoke openly about their experiences, Oprah Winfrey cautioned against the easy path to weight loss, impacting WeightWatchers' stock with her remarks.

The debate extended beyond Hollywood as stars like Sophie Turner and Jameela Jamil criticised Ozempic's influence, expressing worries about its impact on diabetic patients due to its off-prescription use for weight loss. Even unexpected voices, like Elon Musk and Chelsea Handler, joined the conversation, sharing their experiences with the drug.

Ozempic's allure has also spread globally, with TikTok influencers and individuals in Britain exploring its weight loss effects.

However, it's crucial to note that the FDA has not sanctioned Ozempic for weight loss. The drug's growing popularity for shedding pounds has led some individuals to seek it for off-label use, either through physicians or online channels.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, not only lowers blood sugar levels but also regulates insulin, crucial for Type 2 diabetes management. Additionally, it imitates a hormone that signals fullness, leading to reduced appetite and slower stomach emptying, aiding in weight loss for people with obesity.

The side effects, however, cannot be overlooked. Nausea, dehydration, fatigue and bowel movement changes are common. Severe cases may lead to pancreatitis, gallstones, malnourishment, and, in extreme instances, ER visits. Doctors typically start patients on lower doses to mitigate these effects.

As the Ozempic fascination continues, Hollywood and the world grapple with the complexities of its off-label use. The drug, designed for medical purposes, has sparked a weight loss frenzy, challenging traditional perspectives on medication and lifestyle choices.
