Maha Vishuba Sankranti: Wishes and messages to share on Pana Sankranti

Maha Vishuba Sankranti is a significant festival in the state of Odisha. It marks the beginning of the Odia New Year. Also known as Pana Sankranti or Mesha Sankranti, this festival falls on the first day of the traditional Hindu solar calendar month of Mesha. The month of Mesha or Mesa overlaps with the lunar month of Baisakh. As per the Gregorian calendar, this day usually falls on April 13 or 14.

On the auspicious day of Maha Vishuba Sankranti (also called Mahabishuba Sankranti), people in Odisha visit temples and bathe in holy rivers. The Jagannath Temple in Puri witnesses a huge influx of devotees during this time. A special drink called Bel Pana is traditionally prepared on Pana Sankranti – it is made of water, jaggery and wood apple (Bel) pulp mixed with various spices and coconut. People also clean and decorate their homes to welcome the new year.
