A customer at a Dunkin' Donuts outlet in central Florida, US, is taking legal action against the coffee chain after a traumatic incident involving an exploding toilet. Seeking more than $100,000 (Rs 83.14 lakh) in damages, Paul Kerouac's lawsuit alleges severe injuries, both physical and psychological, stemming from the disturbing episode that left him covered in human waste.
Dunkin' employees had acknowledged prior issues with the malfunctioning toilet when the incident took place.
The incident took place on January 6, 2022, as outlined in the lawsuit filed in Florida's 9th Judicial District. Kerouac vividly describes the horrifying aftermath, stating that he emerged from the men's room "covered with debris, including human faeces and urine."
Seeking assistance from Dunkin' Donuts employees to rectify the distressing situation, Kerouac confronted not just the physical fallout but also the emotional toll of the incident.
Adding fuel to the legal fire, Kerouac claims that Dunkin' Donuts staff at the Orange County coffee shop openly admitted awareness of "problems with the toilet." This revelation, coupled with the lack of immediate action to rectify the issue, amplifies the negligence alleged in the lawsuit.
Seeking justice and retribution, Kerouac is demanding over $100,000 in damages and legal fees. The lawsuit asserts that the traumatic incident has left him not only with bodily injuries but also necessitating ongoing mental health care and counselling.
Attorney Scott Spradley, representing Kerouac, told the Associated Press the severity of the injuries, laying the groundwork for a legal battle that could hold Dunkin' Donuts accountable for the alleged lack of maintenance and negligence.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, Dunkin' Donuts, based in Canton, Massachusetts, has not immediately responded to inquiries seeking comment on the explosive toilet incident.
