Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder and general secretary Vijayakanth died, at the age of 71, after being diagnosed with COVID-19 in Chennai on Thursday.

The yesteryear actor, who was affectionately known as "Captain" for his memorable portrayals of military characters on screen, had encountered health challenges and reports indicated that he had faced difficulty in breathing, prompting diagnostic tests that ultimately confirmed a diagnosis of coronavirus infection, as revealed by his party in a recent statement.

Reactions to the actor-politician's death poured in from various quarters:

The actor had been facing health issues since November, and on December 15, his wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth, took over as the general secretary of DMDK.

Vijayakanth made a foray into politics in 2005, by founding the DMDK and the party's formation proved to be a key departure in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
