A Chinese couple’s near-death experience on a highway in Shandong province led to an unexpected but heartfelt decision: they got married just three days after surviving a serious car crash with only minor injuries, South China Morning Post (SCMP).
On July 26, Ma, 31, was driving with his girlfriend on a two-lane highway during a self-driving trip from their hometown in Shanxi to Shandong. While overtaking a truck, its front tyre suddenly burst, causing the vehicle to swerve into Ma’s lane. Despite braking quickly, Ma’s car was crushed against the median barrier. The vehicle was severely damaged, with both ends mangled.
Miraculously, Ma and his girlfriend, seated in the front passenger seat, escaped with only cuts and bruises. The truck driver was also unharmed. Traffic police at the scene called their survival “a miracle.”
Ma later uploaded dashcam footage of the incident, where viewers noted the truck accelerated after the tyre rupture — a move that may have helped Ma avoid a more devastating impact. He credited their seat belt use for saving their lives.
That same evening, Ma proposed. The couple, introduced by friends and dating for a year, had previously discussed marriage but hadn’t planned to rush. Though they initially hesitated due to their torn clothes and bruised appearance, they registered their marriage on July 29 after returning home.
Both families welcomed the decision, calling it a union “bound by life and death.” Social media users flooded the couple with congratulations, celebrating their resilience and love.
