A photograph of an Indian professor, spotted wearing socks with holes while seated in a luxury hotel in New Delhi, has sparked widespread discussion on social media. The man in question, Professor Chetan Singh Solanki from IIT Bombay, has since responded to the unexpected attention, explaining the principles behind his wardrobe choice.
Solanki, often referred to as the “Solar Man of India” or “Solar Gandhi,” is known for his efforts in promoting solar energy and environmental sustainability. The image was taken during a leadership summit in the capital, where Solanki was a speaker. In a post on social media, the professor clarified the context: "Someone snapped this photo of me at the Hyatt in Delhi, during a quiet moment before delivering my talk at the The Economic Times Energy Leadership Summit on 25th Sept."
Addressing the state of his worn socks, Solanki acknowledged the need for replacement but offered a deeper explanation rooted in his environmental philosophy. “Yes, my torn socks were showing! I need to replace them, and I can afford to. But nature cannot. Everything in nature is finite,” he remarked, highlighting that while it is easy for individuals to replace personal items, the planet cannot sustain the growing levels of waste.
Solanki, who has taught at IIT Bombay for over two decades, has made it a personal mission to reduce his own carbon footprint and raise awareness about environmental degradation. He has travelled more than 43,000 kilometres across 20 Indian states to advocate for the adoption of solar energy.
In his post, the professor stressed the importance of maximising the use of material goods, stating, “I may use the best gadgets to enhance my productivity, but I strive to use the least amount of material to reduce my carbon footprint.” He described his approach to life as one that prioritises the efficient use of resources to minimise environmental impact.
Drawing a parallel between business principles and his own work, Solanki wrote: "Just as businessmen aim to increase profits on their investments, I, as a social worker, aim to maximise the impact of my time."
Solanki’s response resonated with many online, with users praising his commitment to sustainability. One individual commented, “Thanks, Chetan Singh Solanki! Your example has inspired me to embrace my own torn socks! This really helps reduce carbon footprint!”
"Powerful way to highlight the urgency of sustainability while embracing imperfections and limitations," another user wrote.
A third user remarked, "Interesting and meaningful message."
