An anthropologist shopping at a thrift shop in Florida on Saturday found what is believed to be a human skull, according to authorities. As per a report in New York Post, the discovery was made in the Halloween section of the North Fort Myers store, the Lee County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
“Based upon the observations of detectives on scene, the skull is believed to be that of a human,” the sheriff’s office said.
The case is not suspicious but more testing from the medical examiner’s office is expected. The store owner claimed that the skull came in a storage unit bought years ago.
The news was shared by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook with a few pictures of the skull.
Captain Anita Iriarte from the sheriff’s office acknowledged the unusual situation and said, “This is definitely different. We don't usually get a call from an antique store that there's a human skull out on the floor.”
Moreover, following the initial testing, the skull was confirmed to be of a human. “It is our belief that it's a human skull,” Iriarte said. She also mentioned that the skull will be sent to the medical examiner’s office for further testing before being sent to Gainesville for comprehensive testing to determine its origin, age, and other relevant details.
According to the preliminary investigation, the skull is 75-years-old approximately. "What's preliminarily been decided is it's like an archaeological bone. The skull is estimated to be about 75 years old. There's no noted trauma to the skull. There's nothing that leads them to believe that this skull has been preserved by suspicious means of any sort,” Iriarte further quoted.
