Skygazers will be treated to a rare astronomical spectacle on April 8 when a total solar eclipse graces the skies only for residents living in North America.

Total solar eclipses have created a sense of fascination for many decades and offered scientists and other experts an opportunity to conduct different astronomical observations.

A total solar eclipse takes place when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, which would completely blocks out the sun's lights and casts a shadow on the Earth.

The total solar eclipse will start at 9:12 pm Indian Standard Time (IST), totality will begin at 10:08 pm and will end at 2:22 am IST on April 9.

The total solar eclipse will not be visible for residents living in India but NASA will live stream the event on their YouTube channel on April 8 from 10:30 pm IST and continue the stream until 1:30 am IST.

During the broadcast, the space agency will share conversations with experts and offer telescope views of the eclipse from different sites along the eclipse path.

Viewers have been adviced to wear protective eyewear such as licenced eclipse glasses during the partial phases in a bid to not damage the eye's retinas and lead to even blindness. The brightness of the sun's surface produces sufficient light to damage the retinal cells, if stared at for a sustained amount of time.
