WhatsApp is reportedly working on animated emojis, and the feature might show up soon in beta builds of WhatsApp desktop and mobile apps.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted way back during the development of WhatsApp's desktop app, and will be released as a future update.

Animated emojis will be sent by default if there is an animated version of the emoji you are using. The new emojis are designed in Lottie, a library that lets designers create animations.

WABetaInfo also noted that the animations are small in size and it will be possible to alter proportions without losing quality. There doesn't appear to be a way to turn off animations for now, which means users who prefer a simpler chat experience may be left out in the cold.

WhatsApp is working to release the feature in beta across iOS, Android, Desktop and Web.
