Budget earbuds now deliver features that were reserved for pricier TWS Bluetooth earbuds in the past. Redmi’s new Redmi Buds 5 are a case in point. We checked out these buds and these are the five things that stand out:
Lightweight design: The Buds 5 are not just light on your wallet, they are also light in your pocket. They weigh just over 40 gm (with the buds in the case). The buds itself are around 10 gm (for the pair) and feel featherlight in your ear. They don’t fall off easily even when you’re in the middle of a gym workout. We dig the matte finish. They come in three colour ways, including our favourite – Fusion Purple.
Three levels of ANC: Active noise cancellation (ANC) was a feature that was reserved for premium buds in the past; not anymore. These buds offer three levels of ANC including a ‘deep’ ANC version that you will find handy in crowded spots like the Metro or airport. You can switch to transparency mode if you need to plug into external sounds.

Solid battery life: The case might be light but it still packs a robust battery — 480 mAh. Redmi claims a battery life of about 38 hours (this includes the case). These buds lasted about six hours in our tests. There’s also a handy quick charge option — 5 minutes of charging gives you 2 hours of playtime.
Packed with 12.4mm drivers: These buds punch above their weight in the sound quality department, thanks to the 12.4 mm drivers. You get four audio modes that enhance your music experience.
Other extras: Pairing is a breeze with Android Fast Pair. The Xiaomi Earbuds app offers a refined interface and a bunch of handy controls. The touch controls take some getting used to though.
The Redmi buds deliver great bang for your buck at an affordable price tag.
