2012 Auto Expo - Bajaj RE60 unveiled

January 03, 2012 / 19:25 IST

Bajaj Auto has finally unveiled their first four wheeler – Bajaj RE60 at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi. The RE stands for rear engined and 60 is the emission figure for this vehicle (60g per km of CO2). It gets a 200cc fuel injected digital twin spark tech engine producing close to 16PS. Bajaj claims that this vehicle has a fuel efficiency of 35kmpl.

The RE60 has body coloured bumpers and funky wheels. The interiors get a central speedometer cluster, folding front windows, 44-litre boot space, 95-litre under seat storage and prominent seatbelts in cabin. The rear seat space is almost similar to the Nano’s. It is also available in CNG variant.

At the unveiling, Rajiv Bajaj managing director of Bajaj Auto said: “Last century was scooters, this century was motorcycle. We have made a remarkable transition from a scooter to a motorcycle company. We've gone from selling cheapest scooters in the country to some of the most expensive motorcycles. For the last 8-9 quarters, Bajaj Auto has been the world’s most profitable auto company. There has been valid criticism that Bajaj has not done justice to its 3 wheeler business even though we are largest in world. We have been urged to do something dramatic for the 3 wheeler business, as dramatic as the transformation from Chetak to Pulsar. These are a host of features that are not normal for this segment just like when we launched Pulsar. It's a testimony to our engineering.”

Prices haven’t been announced today but will be when this vehicle is ready for production a few months down the line. The Bajaj RE60 will be made in India at Bajaj’s 3-wheeler plant in Aurangabad. This utilization of the Aurangabad plant has helped Bajaj Auto save around Rs 200-300 crore.  Everything right from the headlamp to the tail lamp has been made in house. Bajaj are also saying that Renault will be seeing this product for the first time at the Auto Expo.
