Health Minister and Leader of the House J P Nadda, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju will be attending the meeting.
Earlier on July 21, Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President, a little more than two years ahead of the end of his tenure. His term was to end on August 10, 2027.
Radhakrishnan, who was the NDA nominee for the Vice Presidential polls, was elected after securing 452 votes against Opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes
His remarks come after C P Radhakrishnan scored a bigger than expected margin in the vice presidential poll, with BJP leaders claiming he drew support even from the rival camp.
Despite the contest, the Opposition and NDA leaders shared some light-hearted moments during the voting process for the election of the Vice President.
Under the Salaries and Allowances of Officers of Parliament Act, 1953, there is no separate provision for a Vice President’s salary.
Radhakrishnan would be India's 15th vice president when he is sworn in to the post. Another key responsibility that awaits him is the role of chairman of Rajya Sabha.
Dhankhar, 74, shifted to the newly-constructed Vice President Enclave on Church Road near the Parliament House complex in April last year.
'Want this to be one of the most decent elections. No acrimony, personal accusations, comments about individuals, because a person aspiring to sit in that high constitutional office should practice what they preach," the INDIA Bloc candidate Justice (retd) B Sudershan Reddy said.
B Sudershan Reddy will be up against Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA's candidate CP Radhakrishnan, who is the current Governor of Maharashtra.
A veteran BJP leader, Radhakrishnan, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore twice and previously served as the Tamil Nadu BJP State President.
The Congress-led INDIA bloc partners earlier announced their decision to field a joint 'non-political' candidate for the election.
Nadda said, “CP Radhakrishnan considered a statesman, commands respect in all sections of society in Tamil Nadu,” announcing him as the candidate for NDA.
The ruling NDA has a comfortable edge in the vice presidential elections. The vice president is elected by the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, with nominated members of the Upper House also eligible to vote.
Under Article 68(2) of the Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of the Vice President due to resignation must be held 'as soon as possible' after it becomes vacant.
Top government sources alleged that Jagdeep Dhankhar wanted a junior officer to take charge as the Secretary and Incharge of Sansad TV in April
The individual being considered for the second highest Constitutional position will be someone with a strong ideological alignment with the BJP and extensive experience in parliamentary procedure, News 18 reported based on the confirmation from top NDA sources.
The Constitution says in case a vice president dies in office or resigns or is removed, the poll to elect the next person to the office should be held “as soon as possible”.
Dhankhar, 74, shifted to the newly-constructed Vice President Enclave on Church Road near the Parliament House Complex in April last year.
Dhankhar’s tenure as Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman was marked by sharp interventions, frequent clashes with the Opposition, and his vocal criticism of the judiciary.
As Dhankar exits active political life, an election to the post of vice president is expected to be conducted soon
Currently, Harivansh holds the position of Deputy Chairman, having been assumed office in August 2022. He will act as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha until a new Vice President is elected and takes office.
The United States and Ukraine failed to sign a critical minerals agreement after a Friday meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskiy devolved into a fiery exchange, fracturing relations between the two countries.
A tense Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ended in chaos as Trump, alongside Vice President JD Vance, accused Zelenskyy of being “disrespectful” and abruptly canceled a minerals trade deal. The agreement would have granted the U.S. greater access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. The discussion turned heated when Zelenskyy warned against trusting Putin, prompting Trump to shout, “You’re gambling with World War III.” Trump and Vance criticized Zelenskyy as ungrateful, warning about future U.S. support. The fallout could have major global implications, straining U.S.-Ukraine ties amid the ongoing war with Russia.
A high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saw tensions rise as Trump issued a stern ultimatum, warning, "Either make a deal or we are out." Zelensky responded firmly, asserting Ukraine’s resilience. Despite the heated exchange, they proceeded with talks on a minerals trade deal, granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s resources in exchange for investment. Kyiv also seeks security assurances. The White House removed a TASS reporter from the meeting. Notably, Trump’s stance on Zelensky shifted from calling him a “dictator” to expressing respect ahead of the meeting.
