Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said his government will consider further cut in fuel tax, following the Centre’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel.
The Congress leader also said Rajasthan government reduced VATs on diesel and petrol on three occasions, which resulted an annual revenue loss of about Rs 6,300 crore “but the PM only mentioned the revenue loss of 6,000 crores of Karnataka and Rs 3500-4000 crores of Gujarat (both states ruled by BJP)”.
PM Modi told the chief ministers of states that he expects those states which did not reduce VAT to extend the benefit.
"Eight months ago, only 11 states had VAT rate ranging from 1-4 percent and a bulk of the states had rates ranging from 20-30 percent. Now 24 states levy VAT between 1-4 percent only," the minister said.
The likely government proposal will be to allow 18 percent GST in addition to VAT or excise rate, CNBC TV18 learnt from sources, adding that the formula would be introduced only if its acceptable to all the states.
The civil aviation ministry has been urging states and Union Territories (UTs) to reduce the VAT levied on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which is the major component of an airline’s operational costs.
The union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar along with Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana state governments have reduced VAT on jet fuel, and the ministry is in active discussions with all other states to reduce VAT on jet fuel prices, the minister said.
The new rates will come into effect from midnight, Gehlot said Tuesday evening. Due to the reduction in VAT, the state government will forego an annual revenue of Rs 3,500 crore.
After months of calls for lowering the taxes on the fuels, the Centre on November 4 cut excise duty on diesel by Rs 10 a litre and by Rs 5 on petrol.
