Adani Defence and Swedish company, SAAB have partnered to make the Gripen fighter plane in India. In an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18's Rituparna Bhuyan, SAAB India Chairman said that 51 percent equity is a must in defence for foreign companies to transfer their technology to Indian partners. The Ministry of Defence is likely to invite the request for proposal for a single engine fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force in a month or so.
Sweden's defence and security giant SAAB has publicly expressed its intention to not just offer its next generation fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force but has also proposed to make the single engine fighter aircraft in India. On offer is the "Gripen E" which is a variant of Gripen N-G.
Asked if this meant HAL will set up more plants, Parrikar said, "It is private sector which will be required to supply to the air force. We need fighters. We may encourage...there are proposals." Parrikar said yesterday through "proper process", by year end "we might select few aircraft to Make in India.
