TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev said the move was an affront to the very idea behind the creation of the Lokpal.
"Lokpal is Justice AM Khanwilkar whose last judgement before retiring gave ED sweeping powers in PMLA cases," wrote Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose on X.
According to a report earlier this year on the Lokpal’s functioning over the past five years, the institution ordered investigations in just 24 cases and granted prosecution sanctions in six.
Mahua Moitra of Trinamool Congress and two others are the complainants in the matter.
The Lokpal, in its order, has highlighted the fact that the complainants did not submit any credible evidence in the matter while attempting to make the authority do a "roving inquiry".
As directed by the Lokpal, the CBI has not divulged the names of the officials or the allegations against them.

The ombudsman's directive came while deciding a complaint by BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey alleging that Moitra had asked questions in the Lower House of Parliament in exchange for cash and gifts from Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani.
In the Supreme Court, Khanwilkar was a member of the collegium for over a year. When he retired in 2016, he was the third-most senior judge of the court.
Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty, a judicial member of the Lokpal, is currently the acting chairperson.

Justice Prathiba M Singh issued notice on the MCD's challenge to the Lokpal order directing a CBI probe and sought response from the authority.
In reply to an RTI query, the office of Lokpal said that out of the total complaints received during 2022-23 (till August 21, 2022), 134 were in the prescribed format and 1,585 were in non-format.

As many as 110 complaints, including four against Members of Parliament (MPs), were received by the Lokpal during 2020-21, registering over 92 per cent decline from 1,427 plaints received in 2019-20.
Of the total complaints received in the last fiscal, 57 were against Group A or Group B central government officials, 44 against chairpersons, members and employees of different boards/corporations/autonomous bodies wholly or partially financed by the Centre, and five were in the “others” category, it said.
