Trump expressed hope for a ceasefire but stated that he could apply financial pressure on Russia if necessary, although he preferred pursuing peace without escalating the situation further.
At the U.N. General Assembly on Monday, the United States unsuccessfully opposed a resolution demanding Russian withdrawal from Ukraine. But in the Security Council, it won approval of a resolution that called for peace, without assigning blame for the war.
The talks in Riyadh were the first time U.S. and Russian officials met to discuss ways to halt the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
