Currently, 48,000 villages connected under the BharatNet project have WiFi access.
Addressing the Rural Telecom Summit organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan emphasised that a strong connectivity infrastructure will be crucial to ensure success of all ongoing programmes across areas, including health, education and others.
"Total of 31,680 gram panchayat have been provided internet services under this (Bharat Net) initiative till August 28," Sinha said in a tweet.
Government‘s Bharat Net project under the Digital India initiative is struggling, with its March 2017 target seeing a significant cut.
