Telangana Assembly Polls 2018: 438 crorepatis, 368 with criminal cases are in the fray

A report issued by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analyzes 1,777 out of 1,821 candidates on the basis of disclosures made in their affidavit

Massive poll campaigns have come to a close in Telangana and the state is set to vote on December 7. A total of 1,821 candidates are fighting the ballot battle to enter the 119-seat assembly.

Before the voters turn up to the polling booths and cast their vote, here is a detailed look at criminal cases, education, financial background and other details of candidates on the basis of a survey report issued by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The report analyzes 1,777 out of 1,821 candidates on the basis of disclosures made in their election affidavit. Out of all 1,777 candidates analysed, 367 are from national parties, 268 are from state parties, 490 are from registered unrecognized parties and 652 candidates are contesting independently.

The report does not analyse 44 candidates as their affidavits were either badly scanned or not uploaded entirely on the website of the Election Commission of India. Take a look:

Criminal background

Out of all candidates analyzed, 368 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. This makes 21 percent of all the contenders.

Going party-wise, 69 (70%) out of 99 candidates analysed from Indian National Congress (INC), 65 (55%) out of 119 candidates analysed from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), 44(37%) out of 118 candidates analysed from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and 27 (27%) out of 100 candidates analysed from BSP have declared criminal cases in their affidavits.

Red Alert Constituencies: There are 78 out of 119 constituencies which are Red Alert constituencies, which means these seats, at 66 percent, have three or more candidates with criminal cases against them.

Out of the 1,777 candidates, 438 are crorepatis, which means 25 percent of contenders have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

Going party-wise, 12 (92%) out of 13 candidates from Telugu Desam Party (TDP), 107 (90%) out of 119 candidates from TRS, 79(80%) out of 99 candidates from INC, 86 (73%) out of 118 candidates from BJP and 26 (26%) out of 100 candidates BSP are crorepatis.

Education

A total of 799 (45%) candidates have declared their educational qualifications to be between 5th and 12th pass, while 845 (48%) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. At least 16 candidates have declared to be just literate and 48 candidates are illiterate.
