Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh walked out of the Tihar jail on April 3 after nearly half a year, a day after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in the Delhi excise policy case, amid a rousing welcome by party leaders and workers who had gathered to greet him. The AAP leader, however, asserted that this wasn't a time for jubilation but for continued struggle.
“This is not a time for celebration, but struggle," said the AAP leader, further asserting, “Our jailed leaders will also come out soon".
Following his release, Singh proceeded to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence, to meet the CM's wife Sunita. Singh had been imprisoned in the high-security facility since October 13, 2023, from where he exited at 8:11 pm through gate number three on April 3, after six months.
"Now is the time for struggle. Our party's prominent figures - Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendar Jain - are currently in jail. I firmly believe that one day the locks of this imprisonment will be broken, and they will walk out free. Hence, I wish to emphasise that this is not a moment for celebration; it's a time for resilience and determination," said a relatively happy Singh to the scores of party workers.
Commenting on CM Kejriwal's judicial custody, Singh said, "Arvind Kejriwal will not resign, he will continue to work for 2 crore people of Delhi".
"It's time to respond to the BJP's actions; they've welcomed corrupt individuals from all over the country into their ranks. From our party headquarters, I want to address the authoritarian leader of the nation, stating that we are AAP, born from a movement," lashed out Singh at the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
He further took a dig at the BJP, saying, "Are you attempting to dismantle our party? You've imprisoned Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendar Jain. What was their offense? Their offense was striving to provide superior education to 2 crore people in Delhi. Tyranny prevails across the nation, and we stand united with CM Arvind Kejriwal".
Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on October 4, 2023, in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, alleging an exchange of Rs 2 crore in illicit cash at his residence in Delhi.
Prison authorities confirmed his release following the completion of bail procedures. Outside the jail, AAP supporters chanted slogans as Singh, clad in a white kurta-pajama with a brown jacket, was greeted with garlands and showered with rose petals by party loyalists. Heavy security could be seen outside the jail premises ahead of his release, and Singh stood atop his vehicle as supporters gathered around to greet him.
Delhi cabinet minister Saurabh Bharadwaj and AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak echoed Singh's sentiments, affirming the party's commitment to keep fighting.
Singh, who delivered a long speech at the party headquarters, further said, "Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and all others will emerge with a clean chit. Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi, and Saurabh asserted their innocence regarding any involvement in a liquor scandal, countering BJP's accusation by alleging BJP's culpability. They claim BJP received a bribe of Rs 55 crore from Sharad Reddy, who subsequently gained considerable influence, as suggested by the hefty sum exchanged", lashing out another time at the BJP.
A post in Hindi by the Aam Aadmi Party shortly after Singh's release hailed his liberation as breaking "the chains of the dictator."
Earlier in the day, Singh had been briefly admitted to the ILBS Hospital in Vasant Kunj before being discharged and returned to Tihar jail for bail formalities.
The AAP leader concluded his address to the party workers by singing a famous rendition Ruke na jo, jhuke na jo.
