Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, the deputy chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), died of a heart attack in Lahore on Friday, PTI reported.
Makki had reportedly been ill for the last few days and was undergoing treatment following high diabetes at a private hospital in Lahore.
Who was Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, the Lashkar terrorist linked to 26/11 attack?-Makki, the brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, played a crucial role in orchestrating the devastating 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which resulted in the tragic loss of 175 lives and left over 300 people injured.
-Makki was listed as a global terrorist by the United Nations in 2023.
-According to the United Nations, Makki served as the head of LeT’s foreign relations department and was a member of its Shura (governing body).
-Makki, along with others, was involved in raising funds, recruiting and radicalizing youth to violence and planning attacks in India, especially in Jammu and Kashmir.
-During Makki’s leadership roles, LeT was responsible for several key attacks including Red Fort attack in 2000, 2008 Rampur attack, 26/11 Mumbai attack, among others.
-Makki was arrested on May 15, 2019 by Pakistan government and was under house arrest in Lahore. In 2020, a Pakistani court convicted Makki of terrorism financing and sentenced him to prison.
-He had been keeping a low profile since being sentenced in terror financing.
-In 2023, Makki was designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations, subjecting him to an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
